The TiOO Great Oils list is evolving. We’re adopting a new format, which allows you to rate and add your personal comments on individual olive oils, as well as on olive oil stores that you particularly like. Right now the new format is up for US and Canada and Italy, and we’re working as fast as we can on other country lists. In this new format, you’re able to share your olive oil and olive store experiences, while store owners can post news, tastings, olive oil educational events and other goings on around their shops.
We aim for this to become a space where conversations among oil-lovers, producers, merchants and chefs develop and flourish. So please drop by and let us know what you think of the oils you’re using, the shops you’re visiting – and keep posting questions about the ones you want to know better.

By naming certain establishments for consumers to look at to buy quality oil, you show preferential suggestions which I consider unfair to other businesses that supply excellent quality oil. I believe that you should not name businesses unless you are going to provide a complete list of all businesses that
people can shop at.

Jan - Thanks for raising a very important point. In the ideal world, my list would be unnecessary: labels would accurately reflect what's in the bottles, store managers and shopkeepers would know what fine oils is and how to preserve it, consumers would have wide access to a broad range of excellent oils. Unfortunately, in today's olive oil market in most parts of the world, this is not the case. In fact, the exact opposite is the case.
I'm careful to preface my list with a disclaimer: it does not, and cannot, contain every producer of excellent olive oil, nor every store that sells excellent olive oil. As time goes on, I hope to include more and more of them, but the list will never be perfect. Given the murkiness inherent in the olive oil industry right now, the only producers & stores I can include on my list are those I have tried personally, and those which a very small list of trusted advisors have tried. I can't simply take peoples' word for it. Sadly, there's a lot of ignorance and downright dishonesty in the business of selling this luminous substance.
Given these limitations, it's inevitable that I'll leave great producers and stores off the list - many of them, in fact. I regret these omissions, and will do my best to make them good over time. However, I continue to believe that even a partial list of mills, shops, supermarkets and other sources of great olive oil is a valuable resource, in a market where consumers simply cannot rely on face value.
Do you have a producer or a store to recommend, that you feel I've unjustly left off my list? I'm always eager to hear suggestions, and try to add them to my list as I'm able to verify their quality.

@jan, it is even worse. In that list is at least 1 company which is telling a nice story but......... By adding it to the list of great olive oils of the world it is EVEN more unfair for the little producer which makes a good and hounost product BUT does not have the money to make a fancy commercial image which blends away the reality.....

@Original_andalu - Ok, let's talk specifics: which is this "1 company" you are referring to? Anonymous innuendo does no good here. And making it onto my list by no means requires "a fancy commercial image" as you say. It does require having come to my attention, or to the attention of a few of my trusted advisors, and obviously we are unaware of many, many great oils. But I'd say that likelihood of being included in the list is *inversely* proportional to marketing image.
If you are a producer and have a good oil you'd like on the list, send me a sample and we'll see. Write me on the contact form for the mailing address to use.
All best,
Tom
